Burma: Union
without equality
January 4, 2008 - Today is the 60th
anniversary of the "Union of Burma's Independence Day" from British
colonial rule but the country lacks equality between the majority Burman and
ethnic nationalities, said leaders of ethnic nationalities.
Even though in
1947, the first state constitution had laid down equal rights of both Burman
and ethnic nationalities, the three main powers of administration, legislation
and judiciary of ethnic states were gradually controlled by Burman-led
democratic governments and successive military juntas, the ethnic leaders
added.
Thai-Burma border based Hkun Okker, chairman of Pa-O People's Liberation
Organization (PPLO) and general secretary of the National Democratic Front
(NDF) told KNG today, "After Burma's independence, the Burmans have become
first-class citizens and we ethnic nationalities remain second-class
